Behind the Pollutant Breaker, AdBlue Solution Works Hard to Produce Healthy Exhaust Gas for City Air

Mar 12, 2025

AdBlue® plays an important role in activating SCR technology, an effort to reduce air pollution. SCR is what changes harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) in diesel exhaust into harmless nitrogen and water vapor.

The main mechanism involves the decomposition of AdBlue® into ammonia (NH3) and carbon dioxide (CO2) at high temperatures. Ammonia then reacts with NOx into a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) System catalyst to form nitrogen and water.

This reaction not only reduces NOx emissions, but also minimizes the formation of soot and other residues that can build up in the engine and exhaust system.

By preventing the buildup of NOx and particulate matter, AdBlue® helps keep engine components, such as valves, cleaner for longer. This cleanliness results in better engine performance and fewer maintenance problems.

This was expressed by Rama Nugraha and Genta Ginanjar, Founder, Co-Founder, and Owner of PT Hasgara Cipta Gusana (Hasgara). The company is the first German Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) brand holder in Indonesia, namely AdBlue®. This product makes diesel engine vehicle exhaust gas more environmentally friendly.

The role of AdBlue®

Regular use of AdBlue® ensures that the SCR system operates efficiently, which has several positive effects on engine life: Firstly, Reduced Engine Wear and Damage.

Consistent use of AdBlue® reduces residues and contaminants in the engine and exhaust system. This reduction in deposits means less wear on critical engine components, resulting in a longer engine life.

Secondly, Optimal Engine Performance. A clean engine operates more efficiently. AdBlue® helps maintain optimal combustion conditions, ensuring the engine runs smoothly.

This efficiency not only improves performance but also contributes to better fuel economy, reducing overall running costs.

Thirdly, Lower Maintenance Costs. Engines that consistently use AdBlue® require less frequent maintenance. By preventing the build-up of harmful deposits, the need for expensive repairs and replacement parts is minimized. This means lower long-term maintenance costs and less downtime for the vehicle.

Consequences of Neglecting Care

Consequences of Neglecting SCR Maintenance and AdBlue® use can have several detrimental effects on the environment and the engine itself:

First, Increased Emissions. Without adequate AdBlue®, the SCR system cannot effectively reduce NOx emissions. This results in higher levels of harmful pollutants being released into the atmosphere.

Second, Reduced Fuel Efficiency. An inefficient SCR system can cause the engine to burn fuel less effectively. This inefficiency results in higher fuel consumption, increased running costs, and carbon footprint.

Third, Engine Damage. Neglecting SCR maintenance can lead to a build-up of soot and other residues in the engine and exhaust system. Over time, these deposits can cause significant damage to engine components, including the turbocharger, EGR system, and DPF. This damage can lead to expensive repairs and even engine failure.

Fourth, Compliance Issues. Vehicles with a malfunctioning SCR system can fail emissions tests, leading to legal and regulatory complications.

The role of AdBlue® in SCR maintenance is critical to ensuring that diesel engines remain clean, efficient, and compliant with emissions regulations. Regular use of AdBlue® not only reduces harmful emissions but also increases engine life and performance. On the other hand, ignoring SCR maintenance can lead to increased emissions, reduced fuel efficiency, and severe engine damage.

“Therefore, adhering to SCR maintenance protocols and consistent use of AdBlue® are essential for environmental sustainability and the long-term health of diesel engines,” concluded Rama Nugraha.
