From Smog to Fresh Air, It’s Possible with SCR Technology

Mar 25, 2025

Diesel engines are hard-working machines in various industries. However, these engines can also be significant contributors to air pollution, especially nitrogen oxides (NOx) that form smog and acid rain.

The SCR system is designed to minimize NOx emissions by breaking them down into harmless substances. The integration of the SCR system into diesel engines has proven to be an important step in meeting stringent environmental regulations and improving air quality.

This was stated by Rama Nugraha and Genta Ginanjar, Founder, Co-Founder, and Owner of PT Hasgara Cipta Gusana (Hasgara). This company is the first German Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) brand holder in Indonesia, namely AdBlue®. This product makes the exhaust gas from diesel engine vehicles more environmentally friendly.

Efficiency of SCR Technology in Reducing NOx Emissions

SCR technology offers impressive NOx reduction efficiency, often exceeding 90%. This high level of performance makes it one of the most effective methods for controlling NOx emissions. This process involves a catalytic reaction facilitated by a urea-based solution (AdBlue®) that helps break down NOx molecules into less harmful components.

This significantly improves air quality by reducing smog and acid rain precursors. Although SCR systems are highly efficient in laboratory testing, their performance can vary under real-world driving conditions. Factors such as temperature, driving patterns, and maintenance can affect the overall efficiency of an SCR system.

In extremely cold environments, DEF solution can freeze, hampering the system’s ability to function. Additionally, the requirement to regularly refill AdBlue® can be seen as a logistical challenge.

The Future of SCR in Addressing Air Pollution

Despite its limitations, SCR remains a leader in clean diesel technology. Compared to other emission control technologies, SCR systems offer superior NOx reduction capabilities. Alternatives such as Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) also play an important role in emissions control but are often used in conjunction with SCR to achieve comprehensive emissions reductions.

This combination of technologies ensures that diesel engines can meet the latest emissions standards while maintaining performance and fuel efficiency. In conclusion, SCR technology is a significant advancement in the fight against air pollution.

Its ability to dramatically reduce NOx emissions makes it an important tool in the quest for cleaner air. However, real-world challenges and the need for complementary technologies highlight the continued need for innovation and adaptation in emissions control strategies.
